Professional Fire Fighter - NFPA Individual Modules
NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level I
The Fire Officer Level I curriculum identifies the performance requirements necessary to perform the duties of a front line supervisor. This course introduces the student to the basic concepts of leadership, management and supervision by concentrating on such topics as: organizational structure, communication skills, human resource management, public relations, planning, emergency service delivery, and safety.
This course is designed to assist the participants in making the transition from firefighter to company officer. Upon completion of this course the student till be able to explain and perform the role and responsibilities of the company officer.
Upon completion of the classroom training, students are eligible to write the NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I exam to obtain their IFSAC and ProBoard seals.
The course will be a blend of classroom instruction with experienced fire service officers and online assignments.

NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level II
The NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level 2 course is compliant with the NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Professional Standard (2020). This program will be led by experienced chief level officers with over 30 years of service in large-scale integrated departments within Alberta. This course has been developed for the fire officer who is ready to pursue a greater leadership role within their respective departments and is aimed at mid-level officer or supervisor. Course curriculum includes strategic planning and operations, personnel development, human resources, and organizational communications.
This course requires dedicated self-study and pre-course assignments and readings. Upon successful completion of the pre-course work, in-course work, and written and practical evaluations, students are eligible to receive their seals in this course. The practical evaluation and written exam will be scheduled at ESA.
The 1021 L2 course includes 40 hours of classroom based instruction. The course will be scheduled from Monday to Friday from 0800hrs-1700hrs. At the end of the course, students will complete the provincial exam to obtain their seals. A passing mark of 70% or higher must be achieved to receive seals in the course.

NFPA 1041 Level I Instructor
The NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor Level I course is designed to teach fire service members the techniques required to effectively deliver emergency services courses from a prepared lesson plan. Curriculum includes course management, instructional development, instructional delivery, and evaluation and testing. Upon completion of pre-course assignments, in-course assignments, and successful completion of written and practical evaluations, students are eligible to receive their seals in the course.
The course will consist of 40 hours of classroom based instruction from Monday-Friday 0800hrs to 1700hrs daily. Students will also be expected to complete pre course readings/assignments prior to attending class.
The course will be instructed by an experienced firefighter/paramedic with a specialization in education, including a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta and over 20 years of teaching experience.

NFPA 1001 Level I Firefighter
The NFPA 1001 Level I Firefighter Standard is an entry level course that provides students with the knowledge and skills to function as an active member of a fire department team. The training provides basic knowledge and skill requirements for career and volunteer firefighters whose duties involve primarily structural firefighting. NFPA 1001 Level I is the most universally required training for new hires and is a prerequisite for entry to other NFPA professional standards training.
This course includes both classroom and practical training. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the IFSAC/Pro Board seals.
NFPA 1001 Level II Firefighter
The NFPA 1001 Level II Firefighter Standard builds on the knowledge and skills learned in NFPA 1001 Level I and further prepares the student to work as an integral member of an emergency response team. This module will continue to focus on structural firefighting, as well as basic vehicle extrication and rescue techniques.
This course includes both classroom and practical training. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the IFSAC/Pro Board seals.
NFPA 470 Hazmat Operations
The NFPA 470 Hazmat Operations Standard provides students with the basic knowledge and skills to predict the behavior of both dangerous goods and their containers. Students will also learn to plan and implement a response, monitor the incident, evaluate the progress of the response and protect themselves and their equipment from contamination.
This course includes both classroom and practical training dates. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the IFSAC/Pro Board seals.
NFPA 470 Hazmat Awareness & Operations (combined course)
The NFPA 470 Hazmat Awareness and Operations is a combined course that will cover Awareness and Operations.
This course includes both classroom and practical training dates. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the IFSAC/Pro Board seals for both standards.
NFPA 1002 Driver Operator
The NFPA 1002 Driver Operator Standard is designed for students with the prequisite NFPA Level I to gain confidence and experience in operating fire department pumper apparatus. Driving excercises are designed to impart practical experience in effectively deploying pumping equipment under conditions often encountered on the fire ground.
This course includes both classroom and practical training dates. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the IFSAC seal.
NFPA 1140 Wildland
The NFPA 1140 Wildland Standard is widely recognized and used across Canada. The training includes systems for municipal firefighters to battle wildland fires, grassland bush, urban parks or forest fires. Forestry service personnel or emergency response teams in remote industrial areas may also benefit from this training.
This course includes both classroom and practical training dates. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the IFSAC/Pro Board seals.
ESA Aquatic Spinal Rescue - ESA Certificate Only
The Aquatic Spinal Rescue module is a one-day course that focuses on the prevention, recognition, and management of aquatic injuries. This course is designed to provide the rescue professional with the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively respond to rescue and revery incidents in, on, and around the water. The 8-hour Aquatic Rescue Course is scheduled from 9:00 am to to 5:00 pm. A classroom session is conducted in the morning, followed by practical training in the afternoon. ESA certificates are awarded to those who successfully meet all educational course objectives including participation in classroom session, and completion of all practical evolutions.

The Firefighter Survival Skills module is a one-day training course that focuses on firefighter survival skills developed from close calls, near misses, and firefighter fatalities. This course is designed to teach firefighters how to prevent fire ground situations from occurring to to build confidence in skills and techniques to help firefighters remove themselves from life threatening situations. A classroom session is conducted in the morning followed by skills and evolutions for the remainder of the day. ESA Certificates are awarded to those who successfully meet all educational course objectives including participation in classroom session, and completion of all practical evolutions.
